Makanadawa Rain Forest

The Makandawa Rainforest has been recognized as a forest reserve since 1903 making it one of the oldest of its kind in Sri Lanka. It is a dream come true for birdwatchers who visit Sri Lanka as it provides the opportunity to observe an array of rare species such as the Black Eagle, the Trogon, Sri Lanka Orange-billed babbler, Chestnut backed Owlet, the Blue Magpie and the Red-faced Malkoha. Spread across an expanse of over 192 hectares the forest habitat is also home to many mammal, insect and amphibian species. The composition of biodiversity in the area that consists of endemic, migratory and resident bird species as well as exotic fauna and flora, makes it an ideal location for nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers and academics.
